Growth Mindset is not just a BUZZ word, it’s a powerful resource. An evidence based way, with clear and empowering guidelines to raise children to cope with their strugles and setbacks, live true to their values with passion and perseverance, have the courage to use their voice, and be the best versions of themselves.
To say I’m passionate about mindset is a gross understatement. I live for it.
For 30 years I have been reading books on human potential and 15 years as a parent educator. Our mind is one of our most powerful resources. Using our mind to serve ourselves, our children and the world is my mission. Mental health and wellbeing is everything! The CAN-DO Growth Mindset Toolkit is a HOWTO to implement Mindset into our homes in classrooms.
Our mindset impacts our experience, our day and our life.
As you may expect, the particular mindset we have shapes the lens through which we view our world and impacts every single thought and action we take. For instance, consider how different mindsets deal with success and failure.
Having an awareness of which mindset we are in, can helps us to be more aware and conscious of our parenting. We do switch from one mindset to the other.
So what is mindset?
The focus on mindset comes from Psychologist Carol Dweck’s decades of research on mindset. Dr Carol Dweck is a professor of psychology at Stanford University and her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success has created quite a stir among social/behavioural psychologists, education reformers, business leaders and parents alike.
According to Dr Dweck, most people have one of the two possible mindsets — a fixed mindset or a growth mindset.
A fixed mindset is one where we believe that our core personality, character, talent, abilities and intelligence are fixed. People with a fixed mindset spend their time documenting their knowledge or skill instead of developing it. They also believe that talent alone creates success, without effort. People with a fixed mindset think that their traits are just givens. They possess a certain amount of brains and skill, and nothing can be done to change that. They also believe their failures and lack of abilities are fixed and unchangeable, and there is nothing that they can do to improve the outcome. Since success and failure are so tightly tied to their sense of identity, people with a fixed mindset tend to develop an irrational fear of failure and tend to take less risk.
A growth mindset, on the other hand, is the opposite, where people believe that everything about a person is malleable. Through resilience and effort, anyone can build themselves into anything he or she wants to be. This view creates a love of learning and adaptability that is essential for great success. People with a growth mindset believe it takes belief, practice and learning, and that you can change and transform into a mindset. Since success and failure are seen as separate events that are not directly tied to their identity, people with a growth mindset tend to look at their success with humility and handle failures gracefully.
As you can see, Growth Mindset people embrace challenges, persist in the face of setbacks, see the effort to the path of mastery, learn from criticism and find lessons and inspiration from the success of others. When people choose their Growth Mindset, they choose connection not control to have their voice heard and personal needs met.
Four years ago I interviewed Michelle McQuaid who is one of the highlights of my Mindset research over the past 15 years. Michelle suggests asking how we can reframe the story and choose to see it differently. The power of a “Reframe” is what I believe has changed the course of my life and improved my wellbeing and my relationships beyond anything I could ever hope for.
A reframe can be as simple as knowing that there are many ways to view a situation, and then wanting to look at different perspectives and be willing to be flexible in our views.
What else could this be?
How else could I see this situation?
