As a parent educator I am passionate about whole child education. The digital world has added an extra layer to our parental responsibilities in how we choose to educate and nurture our children. In the early days of my son’s life I was very anti computers and out of fear and lack of knowledge I chose to avoid them completely. I’m still happy I did in those very early years however, I found it very confusing and challenging to understand and prepare myself and my child for when he would need them, especially in his school years. My son is 13Yrs old now and in that time the world of technology has grown beyond what I ever thought possible. I personally find navigating my way through the digital terrain without support very bumpy.
So… I wondered how many other parents were out there thinking the same. In my wisdom I did some research and found Dr Kristy Goodwin. I sent an email to the principal of my son’s school and shared that this would be a great parent workshop if the school was interested. The Head of Junior School, Mr Luke Baills was way more than interested. He took it that one step further and wanted to support teachers too. I am so grateful to the school for valuing and recognizing this need within our community for parents and teachers.
I am thrilled to announce that Kids in Harmony, with the Cathedral School of Townsville is hosting Dr Kristy Goodwin to present ‘Parenting in the Digital World’ workshop for FREE. This workshop is open to all parents and carers in our city, surrounding areas and rural towns. If you feel confused, concerned or merely want to make informed choices for your child with regards to technology then you won’t want to miss this workshop.
In addition to the Parenting in the Digital World Workshop on Saturday 14 March, there will also be two Educator Professional Development sessions held during the day. The first one is for Educators of Children aged 3 to 8 years and the second is for Educators of students in Years 4 – 12.For those of you who are educators, it’s a great opportunity to register for the Teacher Workshops as soon as possible. I have attached the links to make it nice and easy. – please visit this link for more information.
The workshops are age developmentally appropriate:
- Morning session – early years
- Middle session – primary to senior secondary
- Parent session – all age groups
For those fortunate enough to live in our beautiful city, I hope to see you there, I’ll be in the first row soaking up as much information I can to support my child.
In the meantime, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you feel about parenting your child in the digital world. What are your concerns? What boundaries have you put in place? What challenges you most?
Until next time,
Happy, whole-hearted parenting
